Be Aware of “SLAMMING”

Shopping around for natural gas or electricity supplier?  Telemarketers calling you claiming to save you hundreds off your electric bill?  If a deal sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

As part of Supreme Energy, Inc.’s commitment to our customers, we are dedicated to helping you protect yourself from deceptive selling tactics and the illegal practice of “SLAMMING”.  The information below provides an overview of “SLAMMING”, how to protect yourself and what to do in the event that you believe you have been “SLAMMED”.

What is SLAMMING?

SLAMMING is the illegal practice of switching the company a customer buys energy from without the customer’s permission.

How does SLAMMING occur?

SLAMMING can occur in several ways.  Some companies pose as the utility and request your account number.  Other companies use fraudulent telemarketing calls in an attempt to lure a consumer’s consent to change natural gas or electric service providers.  Still others have their sales representatives enroll your account without authorization after requesting your account number as part of their “review” process.

Are there any laws to protect consumers against SLAMMING?

Yes, but unfortunately the process is not strongly enforced by the Public Service Commission.

How do I know I have been SLAMMED and what should I do?

The utility will notify you of any switch to a new ESCO (approved third party supplier).  They will often reference an effective date for when this new service begins and provide a number to call if the switch was not authorized.  First, if you did not authorize the change, contact your utility immediately and notify them of the illegal switch.  Second, contact Supreme Energy, Inc. at 1-800-832-7090 and we will make sure your account is properly reinstated.  Third, file a complaint with your Public Service Commission.  This can be done online or over the phone (NJ:  1-800-624-0241, NY:  1-888-697-7728, FL:  1-800-342-3552).  Your utility bill will also state who your supplier is.  If you are a new customer of Supreme Energy, please note the effective date in your contract to verify when we will start as your energy supplier.

PLEASE NOTE:  OUR CUSTOMERS MAY SEE THE FOLLOWING COMPANY NAMES ON THEIR BILL:  NATGASCO, MITCHELL-SUPREME (OUR FORMER COMPANY NAMES), AVRIST AND SUPREME ENERGY, INC.

How can I protect myself from SLAMMING?

The best practice is to never give out your account number.  Be wary of solicitation calls from individuals claiming to be with your utility.  The utility will NEVER solicit you over the phone.

If you are approached with a “special” deal or a contract that seems too good to be true, ask the company offering you the deal for all material related to their offer and call Supreme Energy, Inc. at 1-800-832-7090 to review the materials.  If the deal turns out to be legitimate and we cannot offer you a better price, we will still be happy to assist you.

Unfortunately, the practice of SLAMMING does occur, but at Supreme Energy, Inc. we are committed to helping you protect yourself.  If you have any further questions, please contact us at 1-800-832-7090.
